A Brief Guide To Event Photography

By Albert Phang

Event photography has always been a lucrative business for the creatively inclined. In various events, like sports meets, marriages, and even official meets, the event photographer is given an appealing fee for using his talent. Event photography plays a critical role as people can cherish those occasions and recall them lovingly by looking at the photographs.

Any professionally trained photographer can indulge in event photography and be good at it. However, to excel there are a few tips that should be kept in mind.

The first point to consider is the type of event that is being photographed and the ultimate use of the pictures. Take a corporate event as an example, the images of the event could be included in an internal magazine of the firm, and therefore, your purpose should be to indicate the manner and order of the proceedings of the event in your pictures. On the other hand, if you are covering a private party, then it would be more prudent to concentrate on the people, particularly their faces.

Alertness is an important factor in event photography. You ought to be fully aware of what is occurring around you and must be able to decide when to take a photograph. Clients also like to employ photographers who can comprehend the proceedings on their own and do not have to be constantly told to click a picture. Even though you will develop this talent only after covering a few events, you must constantly keep making efforts to master it.

Familiarity with the venue where the event is being held is helpful during event photography. You should have some idea as to where most of the action is going to take place, and what will be an appropriate position for you to get impressive images.

The photographer should also have the technical knowhow of the camera and its settings so that photographs involving tricky angles can be conveniently taken without losing out on any important moment of the event. Lighting is crucial for taking good pictures and to do a good job, the event photographer should be aware of how much of it will be available at the time of the event. Accordingly, you should come ready with the right equipment and with your camera in the correct mode.

Lastly, as an event photographer, you should be of an amicable disposition. You must be able to befriend the group you are photographing. When you can associate with the group and imbibe the essence of the event, your subjects will be at ease and the photos will come out much better.
