What Makes Up The Compound Bow?

The compound bow was invented by bow-hunter Holles Wilbur Allen in 1967 at his home state in Missouri. His bow was designed with a leverage system in mind, with pulleys (called cams) and cables to allow the archer to draw the bow easily when the strings were pulled. The compound bow's limbs are much more rigid compared to the traditional bows, like the recurve and the long bow, which limbs were flexible, therefore easy to draw.

The stiff limbs of the compound bow, usually made up of aluminum and magnesium, are very stiff and virtually impossible to bend without the cams and cables. In its stiff limbs, energy is stored and released when the bow is drawn and the arrow is released to hit a target. The strings are attached to the pulley with one or two cables attached to its opposite limb. When the string is drawn back, the pulleys pull on the cables causing the stiff limbs to bend. Once drawn back, the limbs are ready to transfer the stored energy to the arrow.

Because of the composition of the (stiff) limbs of the compound bow, it was more durable and highly resistant to extreme temperature changes and the elements of nature, unlike its wooden counterparts that get performed unstably when subjected to moisture and other outside element. Thus unaffected by these outside forces, the compound bow remained accurate and more powerful.

Adding to the strength of the compound bow is the sturdiness of its shaft and limbs. The primary shaft of the compound bow is called the riser, made up of aluminum or magnesium, or a combination of both materials that are not only strong but also very light in weight. The more advanced compound bows use the high quality 6061 aluminum used for planes. This material makes the bow's riser as rigid as possible.

The strings and cables of the compound bow are not made out ordinary steel cables covered with plastic, but are much more high-tech and made from a very tough material called HMPE or high-modulus polyethylene. This material is highly resistant to harmful chemicals, abrasion, is self-lubricating, repels most liquids or moisture, and has lower friction qualities compared to nylon. Its strength is like Teflon that has superior tensile strength and less stretchability. With such materials making up its core components, the stored energy of a drawn bow is able to efficiently transfer the power to the arrow for more accurate and powerful shots.

Our arms are composed of a number of different types of muscles. Among these muscle types, it is the triceps that are always used with arm movements. As the name implies, triceps are comprised with three main muscles.

Listen to the instructor: listening is an important skill that many young children have trouble with. A good classroom atmosphere will help to nurture this skill. Grasping the World Series of Poker Payout Structure

Poker payouts can be very confusing whether its the amount of spots paid, or the percent paid to the players. Learning how poker payouts came about, you have to know where it all started. If you go to Las Vegas you certainly will come across a casino called Binions Horseshoe. Binions is the venue at which the World Series of Poker or simply "WSOP" is held. The owner of the casino Benny Binion was a marketing genius, coming up with an idea to have a winner-take-all poker tournament.

Those type of deals mentioned above, didn't always end up at the final table like it does today. Before the tournament started, the players voted on how the prize pool should be distributed and separated. Players resumed playing using 25% of their previous chips. 75% of the other chips were exchanged for cash at the cage.

In 1977, a legal investigation was conducted, because the idea of a winner-take-all tournament had been fabricated and the distribution of prize money, and operating procedures were grounds for action. The standard procedure was the 25/75 split of the chips. However, the federal broadcasting law wasn't enforced like it was on the rigged quiz show "twenty one".

Popular television network CBS was put in a rather odd position, after it drummed up its own version of the winner-take-all tournament. This tournament was in tennis, and featured tennis stars Jimmy Conners and Rod Laver in the finals. Connors and Laver would play a great final match only split the prize money. With Conners and Laver splitting the spoils, CBS was fined by the FCC and required to issue a public apology.

With federal investigations being conducted, Mr. Binion realized that he had better act quickly and make some changes. Binion quickly disposed of the idea of winner-take-all, and learned that he would have a better following by paying more spots instead of less. So Binion came up with another marketing success, telling the players in his tournament that he was paying the top 5 spots that year.

A new payout structure was introduced at the 1978 World Series of Poker tournament by Benny Binion. The top five players who participated in the main event of that year all received a payout. Binion paid the top five players in the World Series of Poker main event until 1981. He began to pay the last nine players. Paying the last nine players lasted until 1986. The number of entrants entering the World Series of Poker tournament was 141. It forced Benny Binion to expand his payout structure again.

World Series of Poker continued to grow each year, so did the players who got a payout. Chris Moneymaker had a shocking victory in 2003, which resulted in one of the greatest leaps in World Series of Poker history. In 2004, 225 players were paid. The Mapes Hotel: Reno's Lost Art Deco Jewel

On a cold, gray morning in late January 2000, the historic Mapes Hotel in Reno was imploded by 75 pounds of explosives tucked into the art-deco structures support columns. The controlled demolition came despite years of effort by a number of groups within the community and nationally to preserve the building with lawsuits, redevelopment proposals, and grass roots lobbying efforts.

While the efficacy and justification of demolishing the Mapes is debatable, one thing that is not is the glorious history of the hotel. It was built in 1947, and signaled the start of the modern era of casino gambling. Despite the notoriety of Bugsy Siegel and the Flamingo in Las Vegas, it was the Mapes that became the first building in the nation to have a hotel, casino and live entertainment under one roof. It also became the hotel of choice for celebrities staying in Northern Nevada. Clark Gable and Marilyn Monroe stayed at The Mapes during the filming of 'The Misfits'. Joseph McCarthy, America's famed anti-Communist crusader, admitted to a reporter over cocktails in the Mapes Lounge that he really didn't have a list of Communists in the US despite his frequent and vitriolic insistence to the contrary.

In the 50s and 60s it became, along with Lake Tahoes Cal-Neva Lodge the place to be seen in Northern Nevada. The top floor, window-walled Sky Room showcased performances by the legends: Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Jackie Gleason, Louis Prima, Mae West, Milton Berle, Sammy Davis, Jr., and the Marx Brothers among others. Subsequent years were not kind to downtown Reno but the Mapes continued to do well during the 60's and 70's. The hotel finally closed in 1982, due more to financial difficulties experienced by the Mapes family caused by one of their other Northern Nevada gaming properties than anything else.

Reno has yet to experience the sort of growth that has been seen in Southern Nevada, and for that reason the destruction of the Mapes is more open to debate than the hotel demolitions to the south. Even the demolition of The Sands"perhaps the most historically significant casino in the state"is hard to argue against given the inability of such a small property to compete in the current Las Vegas marketplace and in light of the value of the mid-strip real estate.

This is not the case in Reno, where land and buildings for development in virtually every casino area are abundant. The official reason that the Mapes had to come down was that the city needed the land"which sits along the banks of the Truckee River"to expand its riverside district of art galleries, restaurants and shops. The revitalization of downtown Reno is definitely needed and a legitimate goal, but at the same time it is hard to think that the Mapes was a barrier to this. Indeed, a number of proposals for redevelopment including office space, artists lofts and upscale senior housing would have probably served to enhance the livability of the downtown area. For whatever reason, the City Redevelopment Authority wouldn't approve any of the proposals and the fate of the Mapes was sealed.

The role of the City Redevelopment Authority was questioned throughout the process. Overlooking the Truckee River, the hotel was on a prime location between the downtown casino area and the riverfront district. A number of sound financial proposals were presented that would preserve the integrity of the structure including condominiums, office space, and perhaps most viable, upscale senior apartments. Oddly, all of these proposals were turned down by the citys Redevelopment Agency which continued to maintain that demolition was the only viable option despite copious evidence to the contrary.

After the demolition of The Mapes Hotel, the lot remained vacant for almost a year until a temporary ice skating rink was constructed in the winter of 2001. The site now houses a permanent ice skating rink which, while not a bad use for the land, brings into question the insistence by the City Redevelopment Agency that none of the proposals to preserve the building were viable. Clearly, they had no specific plan or even general idea of what to do with the land but for some reason wanted to see the hotel come down. This has led to all manner of speculation, ranging from financial self interest to a rumor that the structure was 'haunted' and needed to be destroyed to forestall future paranormal activity in Washoe County. Whatever the reason, the city of Reno lost a valuable landmark of a more civilized era.

Hockey's Golden Jet: Bobby Hull

Nicknamed The Golden Jet for his blond hair and his jet-like slap shot, Bobby Hull was the most feared goal scorer of the 60s and 70s He and teammate Stan Mikita were the first NHL players to use curved stick blades, which made his already wicked slapshot even more difficult to stop.

Born in rural Belleville, Ontario Hull rose quickly through the ranks of junior hockey and by the time he was 18 had joined the NHL's Chicago Blackhawks. He was a very effective rookie, and by his third year in the league was leading the NHL in scoring. In 1961, he played an important role in the Blackhawks' Stanley Cup championship victory.

Hull made history in 1966 by becoming the first player to score more than 50 goals in a season. His 51st goal surpassed Montreal Canadiens' legends Bernie Boom Boom Geoffrion and Maurice Rocket Richard and earned him a 7 minute standing ovation from the home crowd at Chicago Stadium.

Hulls tenure with the Chicago Blackhawks ended in 1972, when he jumped to the upstart World Hockey Association (WHA). Hull signed for an at the time unprecedented $1,000,000 signing bonus. Initially, Hulls response that he would jump ship for a million bucks was an offhanded joke but when the WHA ownership agreed to contribute to that sum thinking that it would provide instant credibility for the league it became a reality.

Hull would quickly resume his offensive onslaught in the upstart league for his new team, the Winnipeg Jets. He would lead the Jets to two league championship AVCO Cup victories and in 1977 set a new professional hockey record with 77 goals in a season.

Hull suffered from knee trouble throughout his career, and it eventually forced his retirement from hockey in 1979. He would play in a few games for the Whalers before calling it a career. With the exception of an abortive comeback attempt with the New York Rangers in 1981 that was the end of his professional hockey career.

Modern fans may be more familiar with Hulls third son, Brett Hull, who earned NHL superstar status in his own right. The Hulls are the only father/son combination to ever score 50 goals in an NHL season. Brett Hull wore his dads retired #9 in the final games, and will be inducted into the Hall of Fame this year.

Hull is still in good health and splits his time between Canada and Chicago, IL. He currently serves as a PR ambassador for the Blackhawks organization. He is expected to formally induct his son into the Hall of Fame at the ceremonies later this summer.
