Here are some interesting football facts that many don't know about. Many are aware of the fact that our American style football evolved from a much more raw game that split off into different variations, giving us rugby, soccer, and football such as the NFL style we enjoy in America today. It's been evolving for over 150 years and has gained fans by the millions across the planet.
The family tree for both types of football has a long history. They have quite a bit in common, and are both huge players in the development of modern day football. They have been traced back to over six different games altogether, which have played a big part in forming our football game as we know it today.
The difficulty that's involved in controlling a ball with the feet was a driving force in the game of soccer, which is football overseas. It's physical challenges created a great setting for competition, where talented men came to be in demand for representing different clubs and areas in competing challenges. The ones who stood out we would equate now with our NFL stars.
An old military exercise manual has an element of what was then called the 'Tsu'Chu'. This was a type of exercise that involved the basic elements of kicking and controlling a ball with precision and skill, and this dated as far back as the third century before Christ. The ball for this exercise was filled with feathers and mixed with hair. The goal was to put the ball into a small opening in a net that was stretched between two canes made of bamboo. (Like Soccer).
One of the most obvious difference between soccer and our American football is being allowed to use your hands. Soccer doesn't allow you to touch the ball with the hands, but in our American style football of today, the hands are used extensively in advancing the ball. There is still the element of kicking in the punt, the field goal, and the kickoff, but the pass and run and laterall are all performed using the hands.
The rules for the game of football were first laid down in 1876 at a convention, where Walter Camp, who is now hailed as the father of American style football, put them into play. From there the game progressed in popularity sparking fierce rivalry and competition amongst athletic clubs and other organizations.
Our first professional player made a total of $500 for his efforts. His name was William (pudge) Heffelfinger. He played for the AAA, or the 'allegheny athletic association'. He was pitted against the PAC, or the pacific athletic club. He himself hailed from Yale, and was the first man paid for his talents in competing against another team. In this first game he recovered a fumble and ran it for 35 yards and a then 'four point' touchdown. They emerged victorious, 4-0.
Some very interesting football facts reveal the progression that gives us the version we have today. The game progressed to it's first signed contract in 1893. Then in 1895 a Mr. John Brallier was the first openly professional player by receiving ten dollars plus expenses to play for the Latrobe YMCA, and this was against the Jeanette Athletic Club. The original point score for a touchdown was four points, but in 1898 this was changed to five, and then later on to six. A game that's rich in history and tradition, football has changed over the years, and it has changed the fabric of America.
